(Gukdong Kalguksu, Yeosu: Real Talk)
I visited Gukdong Kalguksu, a popular restaurant in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do.
It’s a well-known local favorite and a trending spot among both tourists and locals.
Address: 578-1, Sinwol-ro, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do
They are known not to take reservations.
There’s a separate waiting area, which suggests that waiting in line is pretty normal.
However, when I visited on a Monday at the end of May for lunch, there were empty tables and it was quite relaxed.

1. Parking
There’s a parking lot located to the right front of the restaurant, but I didn’t notice the sign and ended up parking on the street.
The navigation led me directly to the front of the restaurant.
Technically, the roadside is marked with a red line, so parking isn’t allowed, but during lunch hours there didn’t seem to be any enforcement.
---
2. Interior
Since it's such a famous place, I expected it to be a bit shabby, but the tables, chairs, and interior were all very clean.
It’s also been certified for excellent hygiene.
---
3. Menu
Kalguksu (Hand-cut noodles) – 9,000 KRW
Gukbap (Soup with rice) – 9,000 KRW
Barley Yukjeon Bibimbap – 10,000 KRW
Perilla Oil Kalguksu
King Dumplings (6 pieces) – 9,000 KRW
The Perilla Oil Kalguksu is not warm and has no broth.
It’s seasoned with perilla oil and topped with seaweed flakes and minced meat.
I ordered it thinking my child might like it, since she once enjoyed perilla buckwheat noodles — but she didn’t eat it.
Personally, I also found the cold noodles hard to enjoy.
It made me wonder, “Maybe cold noodles and perilla oil just don’t go that well together?”
That said, the perilla oil was fresh and nutty, and all the ingredients tasted very fresh.
The minced meat didn’t seem processed – it felt homemade. The meat had a nice texture and seemed stir-fried, giving it a savory flavor.
The Kalguksu reminded me of a mix between dried pollack soup and hand-cut noodles.
The broth was rich and deep, like pollack had been stir-fried before boiling.
The yellow egg garnish wasn’t just egg — it also had yukjeon mixed in.
I even uploaded a photo upside down by mistake… Google Blogger is tricky!
I still need to figure out whether to hold the home button on the left or right when taking photos.
I added a bowl of rice to the broth.
Usually, starch from the rice clouds the soup, but here it didn’t affect the clarity at all. It was rich and flavorful to the very last bite.
Halfway through the rice, I added a spoon of chili paste from the table — it made it even better.
Just a little is enough.

4. Features
Ocean view: Large windows offer a wide-open view.
Although the restaurant is on the ground floor, it's on elevated ground, so you get a nice view from above.
You can see boats and fishing vessels if you sit by the window.
High chairs for babies available
Self-serve water and side dishes
No napa or radish kimchi, only Yeosu-style gat kimchi, which was really good.
Pickled radish also available.
The dumplings are more expensive than on the mainland.
I wished I could’ve ordered 4 pieces for 6,000 KRW, but they only offer 6 pieces for 9,000 KRW — so I had to go with that.
---
Gukdong Kalguksu’s signature noodles were unique and delicious.
The broth was rich and satisfying — definitely a must to finish with rice.
This will be my first Google Blogger post, featuring Gukdong Kalguksu.
